GCSE Combined Science Edexcel Physics – Paper 1 Higher Tier Predicted Paper 2023 WITH CORRECT MARKING SCHEME Name …………………………………………………………………… Date ………………… 1 hour 15 minutes allowed. You may use a calculator and an Edexcel equation sheet. Grade boundaries These are VERY rough guesses! Getting a 7 on this paper does not guarantee you the same mark in the exam. • 9-9 70% • 8-8 60% • 7-7 50% • 6-6 45% • 5-5 35% • 4-4 30% 01 a) Explain why we use the term ‘model of the atom’. [2 marks] b) The image shows part of the periodic table, this part is for carbon. Compare carbon 12 and carbon 14. [4 marks] c) The term atom is from the Greek atomon for ‘uncuttable’ since Democritus an Ancient Greek philosopher came up with the idea of atoms. We now know that within atoms there are a few sub-atomic particles. Explain how the model of the atom has changed over the years, you should include the names of any scientist involved. [6 marks] 02 a) There are two factors that affect how long a car takes to stop, together these give us the stopping distance of a car. State these two factors. [2 marks] 1) 2) b) A car travelled from home to school. Just as it turned the corner a cat dashed out in front of the car and the driver suddenly applied 55.5kN to the brakes. The car came to a full stop after 3m, allowing the cat to safely get across the road. The mass of the car and passengers was 1,500 kg. i. Calculate the acceleration that the car used to brake. [4 marks] ii. Thus, calculate the velocity of the car just before the brakes were applied. If no answer was found for part bi use the value of 40 for acceleration (this is not the correct answer for part bi). Give your answer to 1 decimal place. [5 marks] c) The journey that the car took from home to school is described below, sketch a distance time graph for this journey. [4 marks] 7.45 – leave home 7.52 – stop at traffic lights for 4 minutes 7.55- get caught in lots of slow-moving traffic 8.05 – see cat running across road near school 8.10 – get to school d) Different factors can affect the stopping distance when a driver is braking. i. Describe three human factors that affect the stopping distance of a car. [3 marks] ii. Describe three factors related to the car and how they affect the stopping distance. [3 marks] 03 A student wanted to investigate how varying the force on an object affects the acceleration. They set up the equipment as shown in the diagram above. Gravity was constant in this experiment and can be taken to be 10N/Kg. a) To get results for this experiment, several measurements needed to be taken. Describe what these measurements were, giving their units. [4 marks]
