Unit 1 : Developing effective communication in health and communication.
P3 : Explain factors that may influence communication and interpersonal
interactions in health and social care environments.
Positive factors
Seating arrangement
Within health and social care, seating arrangements can help make people feel more
comfortable and make them more willing to open up to the person they are speaking too.
The seats are also softer which will help the person concentrate.
An example within health and social care would be within a therapist's room, the chairs for
the patient would be on a angle to the therapist which would help them to open up to the
therapist and start to talk about how they are feeling without feeling attacked or intimidated.
Background noise
Within health and social care background noise can either positively or negatively affect how
effective the communication will be. If their is muffled background noise and it's quite it
makes the person feel more comfortable, as if it was silent they may feel intimidated and
threatened. Also a lot of background noise can be helpful for people with a stammer as it
helps them to stop the repetition of their own voice which could help them speak more
clearly.
An example of this would be in a school where somebody may be in trouble, the teachers or
senior leadership team would take the child into a separate office and talk to them. This will
help the student feel less intimidated and nervous as they may still be able to hear a little of
the background noise however they would feel protected as they will be able to talk with the
knowledge that it is private which will help relax the child.
Confidence
Within health and social care, confidence can affect how effective the communication
between the two people. This can positively affect how they communicate as if they are both
confident they can communicate with ease.
For example if a nurse was talking to a doctor about a patient. if they were both confident
this would help communication run more effectively which improves the standard of care for
the patient. It also helps them to give information easily to each other.
