Cisco aspire: network game
Chapter 1
Lan switches: end user connection, controls information
Routers: movement of information between lans (unaware individual hosts)
Converged network: different types of traffic combined in one network
o One physical network to install and manage
Cisco borderless network: network architectur combining innovation and design,
users are able to connect to anyone, anywhere, anytime.
o Network service
o User and endpoint service
o Providing: optimization, scalability and security
Borderless network guidelines
o Hierarchical: role of each device at every tier
o Modularity: seamless network expansion
o Resiliency: always available
o Flexibility: traffic load sharing
Acces layer: network edge, traffic leaves campus network. Provide network acces to
users
Distribution layer: network foundation (security, qos, routing)
Core layer: network backbone, fault isolation and high speed backbone connectivity
Extended star preffered
Switched lan
o Qos, security, wireless, new technologies
Switch form factors: cost, port density, power, reliability, port speed, frame buffers,
scalability
Fixed, modular or stacked config switch
Switch makes decision based on two criteria: ingress port, destination adress
Switch maintains table of how to forward traffic
Master switch table: describes a strict association between adresses and ports (MAC)
CAM: content addressable memory
A switch populates tables based on source mac address, if destination mac adress is
unknown all ports will be flooded execept the ingress port
Network with multiple interconnected switches: mac table has multiple mac adresses
for one port
Store and forward: receives the entire frame and performs CRC before forwarding.
Damaged packages do not consume bandwith, they are dropped
o Error checking: comparces crc field with own fcs calculations
o Automatic buffering: mismatch is speed between two ports
Cut-Trough: start forwarding even if frame is not fully received, can clog up networks
with invalid frames
