ACTIVITY NO.1:
Alfred V. Matnog March 29, 2021
BSCE-3A
Objective:
To experiment on how to calculate the density and specific gravity of fluids.
Introduction:
Let’s start by talking about what is density and specific gravity. Density is a property of matter
and can be defined as the ratio of mass to a unit volume of matter. And specific gravity is a measure of
density relative to the density of a reference substance.
Materials:
o Weighing scale
o Measuring cup
o Ketchup
o Vinegar
o Soy sauce
o Dishwashing liquid
Procedure:
1. First, make sure your scale is in 0g to get the correct measurement of fluids.
2. Measure the mass of empty measuring cup, so we can subtract it to the mass of each fluid.
3. Fill the measuring cup with the given fluid with the volume of 60mL.
4. Calculate the density and specific gravity of each fluid.
Computation:
𝑚
Density; ρ = where ρ is density, m is mass and v are volume.
𝑣
ρsubstance
Specific Gravity; sg = where sg is specific gravity, ρsubstance is density of the
ρwater
substance being measured and ρwater is density of water.
