In this lecture notes you will find in depth notes for the topic "Approaches to staffing" Theme 1 of Edexcel A level business which is called marketing and people. The textbook "Edexcel AS/A level BUSINESS, 5th edition, Pearson" is referenced in these lecture notes. They are really well written and simple to read and understand. They make learning 100% easier as I have worked really hard to write these challenging concepts in a simpler way, combining power points, lecture notes and book. It really helped me achieve high grades such as A's and B's, but most importantly these notes helped me remember the material over the long term, making it easier to revise for the final exam. This method of studying and revision has proven to be quite efficient and stress-free for me.

LESSON 13
Approaches to staffing
Why are staff important?
- Thy did the work, machine can’t do
- Customer service (maybe they want to do business face to face)
- Production (something must be carried out by hand, e.g. Cake)
- People work in functional areas
- Provide leadership
- Without them you have an empty shell

As businesses grow, staff my change
- Family business: more informal environment,
more flexible timetable.
- Mc: If you do something bad, you’re going to
face serious consequences
They have different ways to staff.

.Are staff an asset or cost?
Staff as a Cost

, Staff as an Asset

Example: GOOGLE
It’s an asset staff because the staff is treated really well, but also a cost staff because they
work really hard. So they first work hard and then they play. (They have everything at work,
so google don’t want them to go home, it’s strategic)

.Where do employees' costs come from? (Not just what they receive in their pay
packet)
- Recruitment (cost of hiring new staff)
- Training (The cost of training and covering staff while they are away from their jobs)
- Remuneration (Pay, National Insurance, Contribution, Health insurance)
- Welfare (Sick pay, Pension contributions)
- Severance (Redundancy pay)
- PPE=Personal Protective Equipment
- Uniform
- Equipment like technology
- Food
- Holidays paid
- Pension
