Breast cancer occurs when breast cells mutate (change) and grow out of control, creating a mass of tissue (tumor). Like other cancers, breast cancer can invade and grow into the tissue surrounding the breast and can metastasize to other parts of the body and form new tumors. Breast cancer cells metastasize via blood vessels, lymph vessels and lymph nodes. It is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women. Breast cancer survival rates have increased, and the number of deaths associated with this disease is steadily declining, largely due to factors such as earlier detection, a new personalized approach to treatment and a better understanding of the disease. It can start in one or both breasts.
