A brave soldier but not a virtuous one. He is easily tempted into murder. He proves himself better suited to the battlefield than to political because he lacks the skills necessary to rule without being a tyrant. His response to every problem is violence and murder. He is unable to bear the psychological consequences of his actions. Lady Macbeth An ambitious woman who lusts for power. She seems like the more stronger person when she urges her husband to kill Duncan and seize the crown. She falls victim to guilt and madness. She eventually commits suicide. The Three Witches Plot mischief against Macbeth using charms, spells, and prophecies. Their prophecies prompt him to murder Duncan, to order the death of Banquo and his son, and to blindly believe in his own immortality. They are servants of Hecate. They use their knowledge of the future to toy with and destroy human beings. Banquo A brave and noble general. According to the witches prophecy, his children will inherit the Scottish throne. He is ambitious, but does not act on those thoughts. He represents the path Macbeth chose not to take, a path in which ambition does not lead to betrayal and murder. His ghost haunts Macbeth. King Duncan The good king of Scotland that Macbeth murders. His death symbolizes the destruction of the order in Scotland that can only be restored when Malcom occupies the throne. Macduff A Scottish nobleman. Eventually becomes a leader of the crusade to unseat Macbeth. His mission is to place the rightful king, Malcolm, on the throne. He desires vengeance for Macbeth's murder of his wife and young son. Malcolm Duncan's son, whose restoration to the throne signals Scotland's return to order following Macbeth's reign of terror. Lady Macduff Macduff's wife. Another contradiction to Lady Macbeth and Macbeth and their hellish world. Donalbain Duncan's son and Malcolm's younger brother. The Corrupting Power of Ambition Destruction is brought about when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints. Macbeth is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, but desires power and advancement. He kills Duncan and is guilty and paranoid. Lady Macbeth urges Macbeth to kill Duncan and tells him to be strong, but she eventually becomes guilty and commits suicide. The play suggests that once violence is used to further one's quest for power it is difficult to stop. The Relationship Between Cruelty and Masculinity Lady Macbeth manipulates her husband by questioning his manhood, wishing that she could be a man. Macbeth provokes the murderers he hires to kill Banquo by questioning their manhood. Lady Macbeth's and Macbeth's understanding of manhood allows the political order depicted in the play to descend into chaos through violence. Women are also sources of violence and evil: the witches prophecies and Lady Macbeth provides the brains and the will behind her husband's plotting. Supernatural The three witches, the floating dagger, and Banquo's ghost. Is Macbeth seeing daggers and ghosts because someone outside is controlling him? Or is he seeing the images of a guilty and free choosing mind?
