1. A concrete operational child
This stage marks the transition from the pre-logical thought of younger children to the logical
thought of adolescents. The term concrete refers to the child’s continued dependence on the
ability to observe and manipulate elements to solve problems (Newman & Newman 1986: 57).
Children in this stage can use logical thought processes to solve concrete problems that exist
in the present. They cannot solve abstract problems that are hypothetical, purely verbal, or that
involve multiple variables (Cummings 1995: 120).
