Pathology of Female
Genitalia I - Vulva,
Vagina and Cervix Uteri
VULVA
Commonly classified as:
cysts
infectious/inflammatory conditions (STDs, miscellaneous
infectious conditions) - not all these conditions are only
sexually trasmitted
non-neoplastic epithelial disorders (formerly called
chronic vulvar dystrophies) - epithelial abnormalities.
dermatologic and hormone related conditions
neoplasms
Cysts
can be small simple cysts
can be due to hair follicle inflammation
most will resolve on their own
abscesses of the bartholin's glands are of most clinical
importance
the duct can become obstructed and this can lead to chronic
inflammation
may become large and can produce pain and local discomfort
Pathology of Female Genitalia I - Vulva, Vagina and Cervix Uteri 1
, treatment
usually either excised or opened permanently
(marsupialization). treated with antibiotic therapy
infection of the gland produces acute inflammation
HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUSES (HPVs)
these are DNA viruses that affect female and male genital
tract, skin, mucous membranes and head and neck
produce characteristic epithelial proliferatins at the
sites of infections
there are over 100 serotypes of the HPV
many of the sites are lined by squamous epithelium so it is
usually a squamous proliferation. However, glandular
proliferation can also occur
anogenital HPVs infect male and female genitalia
