CHE200 - Chemical Eng Fundamentals
Chapter 3 Process variables
- Density and specific gravity
- Mass and volumetric flow rates
- Chemical composition
- Mass fraction
- Mole fraction
- Average molecular weight
- Concentration
- Pressure
- Temperature
Density: Density is the ratio of mass per unit volume:
Specific volume: Specific volume is the inverse of density:
Specific Gravity
The reference substance for liquids and solids normally is water at 4oC:
The specific gravity when the liquid is at 20oC and the reference substance
is water at 4oC is 0.6
Flow rate:
- Mass flow rate: (kg / s, g / s, lbm / s)
- Mass flow rate is the mass of the fluid passing through the cross
section per unit time.
- Volumetric flow rate
Mass Fraction
Is the mass of the compound divided by the total mass of all the
compounds in the mixture or solution.
