contexts. Further there needs to be an understanding of how and when a child develops certain skills
so that these skills can be built upon and harnessed for future development. There also needs to be

1.1 UNDERSTANDING LEARNING FROM AN EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
PERSPECTIVE

In this unit we are going to explore some challenges and possibilities of learning and teaching in
today’s world and we are going to look at contributions that educational psychology makes. The unit
draws on Chapter 1 in your prescribed book. We are going to discuss what educational psychology is
and how principles identified by educational psychologists can benefit teachers and others who are
interested in learning.

Activity 1: (120 minutes) Discussion 1: Definition of Educational Psychology

Try and answer the following question.

• In your view what is the definition for educational psychology? Find at least three definitions, from
your prescribed book and other resources and share your own definition on the Discussion 1. Attempt
to make it relevant for the South African context.

Read Chapter 1 (Learning, Teaching and Educational Psychology) in your prescribed book

After watching the video and reading Chapter 1 you will be able to provide a definition for educational
psychology as well as understand the role of the educational psychologist in the school. In order to do
this you will have to link educational psychology and teaching and learning.



You can also add to your definition of Educational psychology by visiting the Health Professions
Council of South Africa’s website (HPCSA) and find the scope of practice for educational
psychologists in South Africa.



Activity 2: How does educational psychology link to learning and how will it benefit a teacher? As
teachers we want to understand teaching and learning in order to be the best teachers possible. A big
part of educational psychology is research. List some possible educational psychology research topics
in your class or school and also indicate how the research findings will possibly benefit you.
