Path: Typhoon Haiyan hit Palau (an island in the western Pacific) and Micronesia first. Then it made
landfall in the Philippines as a Category 5 storm with wind speeds above 157 mph. After hitting the
Philippines, it diminished as it moved into the South China Sea toward Vietnam, finally disintegrating
into rain over Guanxi, China.
Typhoon Haiyan had 275kph winds, caused 290mm of rainfall within 2 hours and created storm
surges.
It affected 11m people and left many homeless, resulted in catastrophic destruction, flooding
extended 1km inland on east coast, 90% of Tacloban city destroyed, damage was unclear due to lack
of communication, people were swept away and drowned due to fast rising water, parts of
Philippines left without power for up to a month, 450 flights cancelled, major roads blocked, lack of
clean water and food, relief and aid to damaged infrastructure, power barge knocked over causing
an oil spill, looting in Tacloban city.
1st floor of Tacloban convention centre used as evacuation shelter, relief and aid underway by 9 th
November, warnings issued before typhoon, $896 million in aid from the UK, $37 million from the
USA.

Path: The storm swept through the Caribbean as a tropical cyclone (hurricane), and, upon reaching
the waters off the coast of New Jersey, it merged with a fast southeastward-moving cold air mass,
which drew it westward over land.
The hurricane had 120kph winds and affected 6 countries (Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican
Republic, The Bahamas, and the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states).
70% of the population without power in Jamaica, over 150,000 homes destroyed, $65 billion in
damage, 8 million without power in USA, transport infrastructure badly affected, 20,000 flights
cancelled.
