Dry conditions caused by a natural El Niño cycle led to numerous wildfires.
88,000 residents were evacuated from homes, 2400 buildings were destroyed, roads and airports
destroyed, a third of shells oil sands workers evacuated and operation shut down which affected
economy, several tonnes of CO2 produced.
Wildfire cost CA$9 billion directly and indirectly.
Canadian armed forces support with helicopters, water bombers and fire fighters brought in. Offers
of support from the USA, Australia and Russia. Temporary housing provided. Residents offered
CA$1250 per adult as long term compensation from government. June 2016 ‘Fire Aid’ benefit
concert in Edmonton. The fire was handled well.
Yarnell Hill Arizona wildfire
Date: 28th June-10th July 2013
Number of deaths: 19
Number of injuries: 23
Hectares of land affected: 3400
Ignited by a lightning strike during dry conditions.
129 damaged and destroyed buildings, the fire was hard to contain and control, 19 fire fighters died
when battling the fire, $1 million in structural damage.
Redcross set up shelters for victims and residents raised $13 million.
