teaching grammar
affective filter needs to be taken down → teacher as organizer → monitor of students → utterance
teaching grammar:
– three-step-model (batstone and cameron):
– noticing: support meaning and form, presentation: isolated and in context, contrasting with
other forms, require active participation
– structuring activities: learners manipulate the language, changing form in order to express
meaning, learners are given content requiring change in grammar, students should be given
chances to experiment with new forms
– proceduralizing: declarative knowledge easily forgotten, needs to transform into procedural
knowledge: like riding a bike, once learnt always present
– deductive and inductive grammar teaching: deductive: teacher presents rules, students
practice
– inductive: teacher does not present the new rules: rather giving material involving a new
grammatical structure, letting the students come up with the rules and structures ↔ teacher
monitors and supervises
– grammar should be:
– simple and easy to understand
– correct in form
