5.1 Inleiding
Oncologie is de wetenschap die tumoren (kanker) bestudeert. Niet alleen de wijze waarop tumoren ontstaan
en zich in het lichaam manifesteren, maar ook de diagnostiek en behandelingsmogelijkheden ervan. share
Als
wetenschapstak heeft de oncologie zich de laatste jaren sterk ontwikkeld. Daardoor is het mogelijk een tumor
steeds vroeger te ontdekken en efficiënter te behandelen, zodat in veel gevallen genezing kan volgen. Kanker
kan tegenwoordig gemiddeld in 50% van de gevallen worden genezen, al hangt dit wel af van het soort kanker
en de lokalisatie ervan. Van basocellulair carcinoom aan de huid bijvoorbeeld kun je volledig genezen. De tumor

vertoont slechts weinig kwaadaardige eigenschappen en is door de ligging aan de oppervlakte snel te
