NPTE – Pulmonary Updated Exam 2023Respiration - ANSWER Diffusion of gas across the alveolar-capillary membrane. Ventilation - ANSWER Refers to the movement of air exchange in the pulmonary system. Tidal Volume - ANSWER The amount of air that is inhaled and exhaled with each breath during normal resting breathing. 10% of total lung volume Residual Volume - ANSWER The amount of air remaining in the lungs at the end of a maximal expiration. 25% of total lung volume. Expiratory Reserve Volume - ANSWER The volume of air that can be forcefully expelled following a normal tidal expiration. 15% of total lung volume. Inspiratory Reserve Volume - ANSWER The volume of air that can be forcefully breathed in following a normal tidal inspiration. 50% of total lung volume. Forced Vital Capacity - ANSWER The amount of air that is under volitional control The volume of air expired during a forced maximal expiraton after a forced maximal inspirations. FVC= IRV+TV+ERV Forced Expiratory Volume - ANSWER (FEV1) (FEV2) (FEV3) The amount of air that can be forcefully expelled in a specific amount of time second following a full inspiration. Normally at least 75% of FVC is exhaled in first sec. Total Lung Capacity - ANSWER The volume of air in the lungs after a maximal inspiration. Sum of all volumes. TLC= RV+VC or FRC+IC or TV+IRV+ERV+RV Functional Residual Capacity - ANSWER The volume of air remaining in the lungs following a normal expiration. 40% of lung volume FRV=ERV+RV
