Fascinating, dramatic, war and unconditional friendship. These are a few words that, for
me, represent the book ‘The boy in the striped pyjamas’ written by John Boyne.
John Boyne is an Irish writer and a journalist. He has already won 3 Irish Book Awards,
for Children’s Book of the Year, People’s Choice Book of the Year and Short Story of the
Year. He has also won a number of international literary awards.
His most famous book is, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, which was a New York Times
no.1 Bestseller and was made into a film. The book has sold more than 6 million copies
worldwide.
The publisher David Fickling books located in Oxford has published the book in 2006.
The book is a war novel and as the type of novel already says the genre is war.

The things I am going to talk about are:
- the summary
- the characters
- the place and time
- the point of view
- the themes
- the differences between the book and the movie
- my own reading experience
- sources
- the trailer of the movie

Summary

The novel starts with a young Boy named Bruno. He lives a wealthy lifestyle in pre-war
Germany along with his mother, elder sister, and SS Commandant father. The family
moves to the countryside where his father is assigned to take command at a prison
camp, but Bruno doesn’t know this. A few days after they had moved into their new
home, which Bruno doesn’t like at that point, Bruno goes on an exploration to a place of
which his mother and father had said he was not allowed to go to. Bruno finds another
boy on the other side of a fence. He walks towards the other boy, strangely dressed in
striped pyjamas, named Shmuel. And from this day on Bruno and Shmuel are best
friends for life. Bruno’s life is completely turned upside down resulting in a tragic end.

Characters

The most important Characters in this book are Bruno, Shmuel, Gretel, and dad

Bruno

Bruno is the main character and he is nine years old. He has brown hair and has a
slender physique. He used to love doing fun stuff, but after they had moved to Out-With
he hadn’t been able to do so, Out-With is the same as Auschwitz but because Bruno is
nine years old his pronunciation is not that good. He remembers he loved to do some
exploring back home in Berlin, so he decides to go on an exploration. He befriends
Shmuel, which is good because he and his sister Gretel generally don’t get along with
each other, as Bruno call’s her “a hopeless case.” Shmuel lives on the other side of the
fence. Bruno doesn’t really know what’s going on, out there and he never finds out. He
calls those farmers people the pyjama people.
