Removing Surgical Staples: A Step-by-Step Guide
Gather Supplies


 Sterile gloves
 Dressing change tray
 Antiseptic
 Extra gauze
 Steristrips
 Skin staple remover kit
Note: Some hospitals require sterile gloves while others accept clean
gloves.

In the skin staple remover kit, there are staple removers that you will use
after removing the staples.

Remove the Staples


1. Prepare the sterile dressing tray and sterile gloves.
2. Remove the old dressing and perform hand hygiene.
3. Take a good look at the wound to see if it's infected or extremely red.
4. Remove staples one by one using the staple remover, being careful not
to break the sterile field.
5. Discard each staple after removal and count the total number of staples
removed.
Note: Be sure to keep staples on the sterile field to avoid falling into the
patient's bed or on the floor.

Apply Steristrips


 Clean the surgical site with antiseptic.
 Let the area dry.
 Apply steristrips to help maintain wound integrity.
