• Case Management
o Cancer Disorders: Discharge Teaching Following a Modified Radical
Mastectomy
▪ Report numbness, pain, heaviness, or impaired motor function of the
affected arm to the surgeon.
▪ Avoid placing the arm on the surgical side in a dependent position. It can
interfere with wound healing.
▪ Do not wear constrictive clothing and avoid cuts and injuries to the
affected arm.
o Cancer Treatment Options: Priority Finding When Updating the Plan of Care
▪ When the ANC is less than 1,000, it indicates a weak immune system and
neutropenic precautions are initiated.
▪ A patient who has an acute problem takes priority over a client who has a
chronic problem.
▪ A client who has unstable findings takes priority over a client who has
stable findings.
• Client Rights
o Legal Responsibilities: Recognizing a Client's Right to Refuse Treatment
▪ Competent adults have the right to leave the facility without a discharge
prescription from the provider.
▪ If a client refuses treatment, the client signs a document stating that he
understands the risks involved with refusing the treatment or procedure
and that they have chosen to refuse it.
▪ The nurse asks the client to sign an Against Medical Advice form and
documents the incident.
• Accident/Error/Injury Prevention
o Arthroplasty: Postoperative Instructions for Preventing Musculoskeletal
Complications
▪ Provide postop care and prevent postop complications.
▪ CPM machine can be prescribed to promote motion in the knee, promote
circulation, and prevent scar tissue formation.
▪ Place a small blanket or pillow slighting above the ankle area to keep
heels off the bed to prevent pressure ulcers.
, o Preoperative Nursing Care: Assessing for a Latex Allergy
▪ Allergies to banana or kiwi can indicate that the patient is at risk for a
reaction to latex.
▪ Allergies to avocado can indicate that the patient is at risk for a reaction to
latex.
▪ Use latex free equipment and supplies.
