INC3701
Assignment 02
SEMSTER 1
2023

, Answer to Question 1:

1.1.1 According to the medical model of disability, learners who are regarded as
'outside the boundaries of normal' are those who have impairments, disabilities, or
disorders. These learners are seen as individuals who need to be fixed or cured
of their disabilities so that they can conform to the normative expectations of the
society. The medical model justifies this view by assuming that disabilities are the
result of individual pathology, and that they need to be treated by medical
professionals using medical interventions.

1.1.2 The consequences of being regarded as 'outside the boundaries of normal'
can be devastating for learners who are in such a predicament in normal and full-
service schools. These learners are often stigmatized, marginalized, and
discriminated against, which can result in low self-esteem, social isolation, and
poor academic performance. They may also face bullying, harassment, and
exclusion from social and extracurricular activities. Furthermore, they may
experience a lack of access to appropriate educational resources, such as
assistive technology, specialized instruction, and accommodations, which can
further exacerbate their academic and social challenges. Ultimately, the
consequences of being labeled as 'abnormal' can negatively affect the learners'
overall well-being, mental health, and future opportunities.

Answer to Question 3:

3.1.1 To incorporate the principle that culture and context influence learning in a
Grade 5 inclusive class with 35 learners, a teacher can use a variety of strategies.
For example, the teacher can encourage learners to share their cultural
backgrounds and experiences with one another through storytelling, music, and
art. The teacher can also incorporate culturally relevant materials and resources
into the lesson plans to make the learning more engaging and meaningful for the
learners. Additionally, the teacher can create a classroom environment that is
respectful and inclusive of diverse cultural perspectives, norms, and values.

3.1.2 To incorporate the principle that learners construct knowledge from their
experiences, a teacher can use a constructivist approach to teaching and learning.
The teacher can encourage learners to be active participants in their own learning
