Consideration, formation and formalities
Aim of this workshop
This workshop will introduce you to the doctrine of Consideration. In order for a contract to be
enforceable, each party must normally promise something - usually one party will promise to
provide goods or services and the other party will promise to pay for them or do something else in
return. This workshop will help you understand the general principles of consideration.
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this workshop, we want you to show that you can:
1. Explain the nature of the doctrine of consideration
2. Distinguish sufficiency from adequacy of consideration
3. Identify and explain past consideration
4. Apply the legal principles to a given scenario

sections 4-001 to 4-023 inclusive on consideration. Supplement the notes that you
made from the lectures.

sections 10-001 – 10-008 inclusive on duress. Supplement the notes that you made
from the lectures.
Preparation
Complete the preparatory exercise ahead of the workshop. You should not attempt the Class
Exercises as time will be given during the class to complete them.
