Part 1: Knowledge-based Questions
1. Function words are words that exist to explain or create grammatical or structural
relationships into which the content words may fit. Words like "of," "the," "to," they have
little meaning on their own. They are much fewer in number and generally do not change as
English adds and omits content words. Content words (words that carry the most meaning
when we speak, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) typically receive stress in
phrases, while function words (words that have very little meaning, such as prepositions,
articles, pronouns, and auxiliary verbs) do not. These words also do not have dictionary
meanings.

2. The informational function – This information is mainly based on facts and truths, and it can
be communicated through writing or verbally.

The expressive function – With this function, no information is given through but instead be
discuss/show our emotions or feelings. Our tone of vice as well as body language plays an
important role here.

The directive function – This function is used to give instructions or make a request.
