, THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The nervous system is one of the tools that the human body uses to control the
activities of its tissues and organs. They do it by detecting and generating
stimuli.
The central nervous system is made up of the spinal cord and the brain. They
send, receive, and process data from all the parts of the body. The nervous
system can be divided into:
Somatic nervous system: also called the voluntary system because its
actions are conscious controlled.
Autonomic nervous system: also called involuntary nervous system the
actions of this system are able to functions without conscious control. This
system has two distinct parts:
o Sympathetic nervous system is when the body react during
emergency situations.
o Parasympathetic nervous system is when the body maintains is
day-today functions.
Sympathetic Parasympathetic
Eyes Dilates pupil Constricts pupil
Salivary glands Inhibits flow saliva Stimulates flow of saliva
Lungs Dilates bronchi Constricts bronchi
Heart Accelerates heartbeat Slows heartbeats
The nervous system in compose of two different cells:
Neurons- electrical impulses are transmitted, and the cells can be
myelinated or non-myelinated.
Glial cells- these perform out operations that help the neurons, such as
component manufacturing.
