Dear Parents , staff and stakeholders.
A school-wide Sexuality Education Programme
In the light of the current sexual education programs, I would like to propose some changes
in the school wide programme in senior phase This will be in line with the CAPS document
on education but will include project-based learning and programs that involve teachers,
parents and the community leaders.(NGOS)
The reason for this new program is to deal with the countries current gender-based violence
and sexual heath problems. Young people must be prepared for a safe, productive fulfilling
life even with the challenges of HIV, unintended pregnancies, gender-based violence and
gender inequalities. These pose a risk to student’s wellbeing. Even with the current
curriculum there still seems to be problems where young people are not empowered and
don’t now how to make informed choices when it comes to sexuality and relationships.
(Goldman & Collier-Harris, 2012)
Some of the barriers currently experienced in teaching comprehensive sexual education
include, lack of access to appropriate curriculum and training resources. Also, teachers’
attitude and readiness to deliver the curriculum. Students’ motivation and parents’
cooperation are other problems areas. (Francis, 2103)
The solution to this problem is to introduce project-based learning and teaching. Students
will be encouraged to do research on sexuality and problems experienced by teens. Real
world problems such has HIV and Aids, unwanted pregnancies that result in school dropout.
They will do group work and collect, link, share and apply the new knowledge to their lives.
They will use their writing and speaking skills. I final school presentation can be done Infront
of parents, teachers and students.
Project based learning is proved to be very effective according to research. (Project Based
Learning, n.d.). There are five keys to project-based learning. These are dealing with real
