, INTRODUCTION
Public participation is a democratic process of ensuring that people or communities are
able to effectively participate in all matters affecting them.
It is a principle that is accepted by all spheres of government in South Africa, where
people make all decisions themselves. It opens platforms where communities can
exchange ideas or views and influence decisions.
As a Manager in my organization and we have been joined by a new staff member. I
need to give a new staff member the basic information about the organization and the
importance of public participation. The orientation program is going to include the
modules of Public Participation Management and Administration.
1. CORPORATE COMMUNICATION
Communication is a very important tool in any organization or workplace and
communities. Success in the workplace depends on effective communication.
There is a need for effective communication between officials, communities or citizens
and Councillors. Citizens need to be involved in all the processes pertaining
developments and projects in their municipalities.
There are certain barriers that every organizations faces that can lead to poor service
delivery, namely:-
• Interpersonal barriers
Communication is not a one way street, one need to bear in mind that in order to have
an effective communication, one has to give others a chance to raise their views.
Listening to others in order to be listened is also very important. In order to have others
open up to you and listen, you must be open yourself and listen to others.
It is important for an official to make sure that his or her personal problems do not
jeopardize his or her communication with public or communities. The emotions are a big
barrier to communication and are destructive in important decision meetings and it can
affect service delivery.
