Today there is a growing trend for health care providers to treat patients from a Holistic view. As nursing theorist Madeleine Leininger explains, “Our rapidly growing multicultural world makes it imperative that nurses understand different cultures to work and function effectively with people having different values, beliefs, and ideas about nursing, health, caring, wellness, illness, death, and disabilities.” The majority of American’s believe religion and spirituality is very important and affects their health care encounters. Patients want to discuss their spirituality with their providers as part of the plan of care. Several spiritual assessments have been put into practice so healthcare providers can better support the needs of their patients as a whole.
This paper is a spiritual interview on a white 40-year-old male with AML who was raised
with a catholic background that has been treated with chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. This paper will discuss the recent patient D.L.’s interview of spiritual assessment, analysis of this interview, and future appropriate spiritual interventions for when encountering individuals, families, and groups.
The Interview
This paper is a spiritual assessment interview on a white 40-year-old male with AML who was raised with a catholic background that has been treated with chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. This interview took place over the phone. The subject lives in a suburb of Chicago, Ill.
