Miles and Barlow - Theory
Theory provides a framework, a vision or a model for explaining or
understanding phenomena
Theory is a process - which can result in information. It is not purely factual;
everything is up for discussion.
Theory is also often intended to force readers to look at the world anew, to
question the ‘normal’ ways of thinking about things
Theory can be normative and/or critical
Normative theory helps to explain the world by offering ways of thinking
about it, and proposing methods and approaches which might gain new
insights
Critical theory shows problems in how the world is organised and offers
alternative, more appropriate systems
Theory comes out of a context
people who write stories do so in response to what is going on around them
these contexts should be taken into acount when reading a text
