1. Introduction
The information agency chosen for this study is Alexandra 3rd Avenue Children's
Library located in Alexandra Township. This children's library is an extension library
service of the City of Johannesburg Library. Mayer and Fourie (2017:123) describe
this type of extension library service as a branch library in a key area close to
people.
The study seeks to examine the status of Alexandra 3rd Avenue Children's Library
and thereafter evaluate it by using the SWOT (strength-weakness-opportunity-threat)
analysis. In addition the study will investigate future possibilities of this information
service and also propose a strategy on how to realise this possibilities. The last part
of the study will explain the implementation of the proposed strategy. First the study
will provide a brief background of this library.
2. Brief background of the library
Alexandra 3rd Avenue Children's Library is situated at number 123 – 3rd Avenue in
Alexandra, a township 30 kilometres the north of Johannesburg City. Alexandra is a
blacks area and one of the poorest townships in South Africa. The township is fondly
known as Alex. Most families live in one-room brick houses if not in a shack. This
situation gives the impression that at home children in this community do not have
access to reading material, which makes this library essential.

The composition of Alex community is diverse and multicultural. Although
predominantly black, there is also a small section of the coloured community, and a
growing number of migrants from neighbouring countries. Alexandra 3rd Avenue
