Assignment 2 Semester 1 2023

, Question 1
Discuss your career by applying the three steps of the
Career Invention Model by Coetzee (2007). In your answer
describe each step and apply it to your own career
planning process. Motivate your answer with examples
from your career life story. [15]

The Career Invention Model by Coetzee (2007) consists of three steps: self-
awareness, opportunity awareness, and decision-making. These three steps form
a cyclical process that individuals can use to create and manage their careers.

Step 1: Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the first step in the Career Invention Model. It involves a deep
understanding of one's skills, interests, values, and personality traits. This self-
awareness helps individuals identify potential career paths that align with their
strengths and passions. Self-awareness also helps individuals identify areas where
they need to improve or develop new skills.

In my own career planning process, self-awareness played a significant role. I have
always been interested in technology and its impact on society. However, it was
not until I started working in the field that I realized my skills and interests were
well-suited for a career in artificial intelligence. I had a strong aptitude for math and
logic, and I enjoyed solving complex problems. I also valued innovation and
creativity and found that AI allowed me to combine these interests in a meaningful
way.

Step 2: Opportunity Awareness
Opportunity awareness is the second step in the Career Invention Model. It
involves understanding the current job market and identifying potential career
opportunities. This step requires research and networking to identify potential
career paths and the skills and qualifications needed to pursue them. Individuals
must also consider the economic and social trends that may impact their chosen
career path.

In my career life story, opportunity awareness played a crucial role when I decided
to pursue a graduate degree in artificial intelligence. At the time, the field was
rapidly growing, and there was a high demand for individuals with advanced AI
skills. I researched various graduate programs and identified the one that best
aligned with my career goals. I also networked with professionals in the field to
gain insights into the industry and learn about potential job opportunities.
