Explain how the emergence of African History in the 1960s changed
perspectives of Africa in the world. In your response, refer to perspectives of
Africa before and after the 1960s and how they use of non-traditional historical
sources contributed to these changes.
European explorers portrayed Africa as having had no history until the 1960s, with
African countries gaining independence, and anthropology, archaeology and
linguistics, and oral traditions disapproved of this myth. It has to show how Africa
was written about before the 1960s; it has to highlight the changes that took place in
the 1960s, i.e. decolonisation, Pan-Africanism, and how Africans started using the
nontraditional disciplines. Must also discuss how African history was changed
because of this.
• European explorers believed that Africa had no history of civilisation before
European intervention. Students can cite explorers such as Hugh Trevor Roper,
