He states that he had been working in his yard using a string trimmer when the trimmer slipped and cut his leg. He cleaned the wound with water from the garden hose and covered the wound with a large Band-Aid. Several days later, he developed fever to 100.6˚ F and chills and noticed that his leg was swollen and red. He comes to the emergency department for definitive care. Explain why you think the patient presented the symptoms described: The patient presented with the symptoms of pain, redness, and swelling of his right calf, this is related to a wound infection. A wound infection occurs when germs or bacteria infiltrate the damaged skin, this is where the bacteria proliferate causing a cascade of events. Normally patients can manage the minor symptoms such as pain, redness and swelling of the wound at home, however more serious wound infections that present with fever, chills, or nausea will need to be addressed by a medical professional such as the aforementioned case. This patient's symptoms progressed due to his lack of proper wound care. The patient rinsed the wound with hose water and covered it with a large band aide. Proper cleaning of a wound consists of using warm soapy water, allowing the wound to dry, applying an antiseptic ointment to tho wound, and protecting the wound with a gauz
