Nausea – wavelike sensation that may or may not culminate in vomiting

Retching – Gastric and oesophageal movements of vomiting without expulsion of
vomitus

Vomiting - Forceful expulsion of the contents of the: stomach, duodenum, or
jejunum through the oral cavity.

Causes of nausea and vomiting:




Anti-emetics act to centrally inhibit emesis and include antagonists of:

 H1
 mACh

Pro-kinetic drugs act to promote gastric emptying this includes:

 Drugs acting directly on smooth muscle
 Drugs that act on the enteric nervous system

 Phenothiazines: chlorpromazine and Acepromazine
