Unit 10 aim A
, Water
Water consists of two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule, the electrons that are
shared between them are joined together by intermolecular bonds. Not only that but it also
has intermolecular bonds between the partially positive charged area of the hydrogen atom
and the partially negative charged area of the oxygen atom. This means that water is a polar
molecule because it as an area of partially negative and partially positive charge. A polar
molecule means that a molecule has an uneven distribution of electrons causing one side to
become partially positively charged and the other side to become partially negative. Water is
produced by the hydroxyl group on one monomer reacts with the hydrogen from the OH
group on another different monomer, leaving one oxygen atom connecting the two
monomers. Here is the equation for the reaction:
OH- + H+ H2O
A condensation reaction happens when monomers are joined together and a water molecule
is formed.
