Unit 2

D2- Evaluate the effectiveness of national initiatives in promoting anti-discriminatory
practice

National initiatives are things that are put into place to promote a something. An example of
a national initiative being put in place is having gay pride day once a year. This was put in
place to promote that people who are gay allowing them to feel equal and respected. They
are effective as they promote equality give individuals the respect they deserve. I am going
to now talk about a few national initiatives that were put in place to prevent anti-
discriminatory practice and see how effective they were.

National initiatives convections

Show racism the red card

Show racism the red card is a government national initiative that was put in place to show
young people a better understanding of racism and how it affects individuals and society.
This campaign used football to help tackle racism. The key aims of this campaign were to:

Equip young people with a better understanding of what racism is and how it affects
individuals (both ‘targets’ and ‘perpetrators’) and society

Increase young people’s awareness of the responsibility to challenge racism in themselves
and others, and how this can be done

Increase young people’s awareness of critical thinking and its usefulness in challenging
stereotypes and recognising media bias

Enable young people to gain more knowledge about appropriate/inappropriate
terminology relating to ethnicity and race.

Show racism the red card has been a campaign for over 20 years has played a huge part in
helping unite people from different groups of society through football. This government run
charity coaches 50,000 individuals per year about the issue of racism, show racism the red
card uses the date 19th October to promote the message they are sending by asking schools
around the UK to wear something red and donate £1 to the charity to help the deliver more
anti-racism education for young people. Through advertising this campaign has become well
know and has had a big impact I will now talk about the effectiveness of this national
initiative and go over the strengths and weaknesses of this scheme.

, Strengths and weaknesses

Since the organisation was founded in 1995 there has been a huge decrease in racism. In
2011 a football player was banned for 8 matches and fined £40,000 because of racially
chanting against a black football player. Show racism the red card then go involved with this
and advertised there campaign more which then helped football players feel more
empowered to speak up against racial abuse. With the support of professional athletes and
celebrities that campaign has decreased racism within football by 20% since it came out.
This shows that this national initiative had an impact at preventing race discrimination
causing a more diverse society with more people of different ethnic backgrounds getting
along.

Although this campaign has played a huge role is decreasing racism there are some
downsides. In recent years’ racism has been more present an incident back in 2015 involved
a media outrage because of a black football player getting a gun tattoo on his leg. This was
seen as promoting gun violence however the player said this was to respect his dad who
was killed in gun violence. From this tattoo the player received racist remarks about this
tattoo. Another weakness could be in 2018 a Tottenham fan threw a banana at a Gabon
born player. Furthermore the campaign has done a lot at preventing racism but from 2016-
2019 there has been an increase in racial abuse within football that should not be tolerated
and this organization should work harder to have bigger consequences because of racism.

When this national initiative was first created it showed a decrease in racism greatly but in
recent years has become less effective at preventing racism. So this was effective at
decreasing discrimination at first but has become less effective recently.
