Andalusia First European city, located in Spain, to have paper mills
Arriccio Base layer of wet plaster placed directly onto the receiving surface
Beta radiography Using Xrays to view the internal structure (material, grid, fibres, etc of the
panel or canvas) and/or working drawings
Buckling Sudden change in shape (deformation), paper expands and contracts when
there are changes in temperature and humidity

Burin Pointy tool used in engravings, has a round but flattened head, able to create

Camadieu Multicoloured images on woodcut, aka Chiaroscuro woodcut. Printing from
two or more blocks, each with a different colour to so create different lines and
surfaces of colour to create a coloured image, piling upwards to the layer of

CMYK Cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (= black), refers to a system representing the
colours used in printing
Consolidating Adding Japanese paper on top to prevent impoundment
Coucher One of the 3 workers of the sheet-forming process, places the drained paper
sheets between felt pieces to further soak up all the excess water & so prevent
the sheets from sticking to one another

CT scan Used to look at the internal structure of the media, mostly done to look at the
current state and possible prior degradation/damage on canvas or panel
Deckle Wooden frame with brass grid used to size & shape paper sheet individually,
done by the vatman up to 400 sheets a day, last step before drying
Delamination Loss of adherence between ALL paintlayers
Delineavit Latin for “he painted”
Dendrochronology Checking the aging of the panel wood to see if it needs (pre)restoration to
prevent impoundment

DND-filter Divided Neutral Density, blocks excess light only on the top half of the image.
Very helpful for images with overexposed skies or artificial lighting
Doublering Invasive form of conversation trough removing old canvas lining to adding
new
DSLR Digital Single Lens Reflector, body of a micro camera with a cropped sensor
Element of The result will only be revealed at the very end of the (printing) process. The
surprise maker is working ‘blind’, f.e. with etching, screenprint, layering etc
