Class response Week 1
I enjoy the class and I would like to explore more about communication and different
concepts in life. Communication is a complex process that we need to encode our thinking
into words or speech. However, the receiver might get other meanings that you give as
everyone has various of identities and social positions. It goes back to what the lecture said
that meaning has to be made. As I know how to write in Chinese, I can understand the
example that Ken given in the class such as good in Chinese is combine by women and son.
In Chinese culture, if women have son or women nurtures son is named as good. I do not
agree with the statement, however, it is what meaning is given in traditional Chinese culture.
Additionally, just like everybody looking at the women washroom’s signal with a circle and
triangle, which people think that is a woman. That’s how powerful of the symbolic system is.
By signifier ad signified, people can understand the world structure, but it doesn’t mean it is
reasonable. Therefore, I think that how we symbolic really matter in our communication and
be careful what we are going to say and see.
I think that technology is powerful even a tiny tool can change our lives such as
toothbrush. Every single invention brings certain consequence on how we use and perceive. I
understand that when we maximize and empower the technology, some people suffer or gain
with the system build with such as grading in education. However, it does not change the
purpose. For example, even I am having online class, the purpose of gaining knowledge from
this course will not be changed compare with the in-person class. Technology is great but we
need to use it as a tool to improve our living rather than damaging. We need to control the
tools instead of being control by them.
