a) Write a Report to Mr Matthews that evaluates with examples, the effectiveness of
business information and its communication as key contributors to the success of
SRC.

As part of your report you will need to use illustrative examples in your evaluation
and investigate two other organisations who have excellent communication and
information management systems making comparisons with the situation in
Southern Regional College and these other two organisations.

Note: Examples must be used throughout to illustrate points made. (D2)

1.0 Introduction
A report has been requested by Mr Matthews which will involve three organisations with
excellent business communication and information management systems being studied. The
three organisations chosen are Southern Regional College, Belfast Metropolitan College and
Northern Regional College. The organisations will be compared and contrasted with one
another in detail. The websites of the colleges will be looked at, as well as other sources of
information which suggest the effectiveness of the business information and its
communications as key contributors to the success of the colleges.
2.0 The terms of reference
The report is aimed at the senior management team of SRC and other related departments.
It will be presented at the next department meeting.
3.0 Procedure
This report will look at the effectiveness of business information and communications as
contributors to the success of SRC, BMC and NRC. The business information and
communications of the three colleges will be compared and contrasted throughout. The
information will be gathered from the college websites, as well as results from a
questionnaire answered by students enrolled in SRC. Corporate communications,
prospectuses and enrolment figures of the three colleges will also be compared and
contrasted throughout the report.
4.0 Findings
4.1 Websites
SRC, BMC and NRC have many ways of providing information to communicate to their
stakeholders. For example, their staff, students and board of governors. The information
and communication systems they provide on their websites ultimately have an effect on the
success of the colleges. All three colleges have the same aim, which is to provide an up to
date website providing appropriate information that will encourage people to enrol within
the college.

The marketing department note that this method of advertising is becoming one of the
fastest growing ways to promote and market a course. It includes both social media
marketing and marketing on the college website. The latest growth in technology means
students can find out about courses available in SRC quicker than ever before. Thousands of
people visit the SRC website every day making
it a great way to provide information to the
public. The website also combines a variety of
types of information which come from many
sources such as governing bodies and
departments within the college. Information
contained includes course information, contact
details, online support, the prospectus and
other valuable resources as well as SRC news.
The website contains logos, images of high
resolution, videos, text and tables which all
prove to be effective in promoting courses and
prove to be effective in communicating with
the public.


The SRC website is extremely effective in promoting the success of the college as the home
page has a slide show – using multimedia information – to present success stories and the
day-to-da activities of the college. It provides information and a great insight into what
exactly the college has got to offer and recent
achievements of students within the college.
This is a fantastic way to get information across
as it gives people real life experiences of what
it is like to study in SRC.
As well as the college providing information on
the home page, it must be noted that the
branding and colouring of the website is
consistent and effective throughout. Using the
blue and orange colour scheme accompanies
the college logo which is an excellent attribute
to the corporate communications of the
college. Likewise, with the NRC and BMC
websites, there is a consistency with the
colour scheme.
On all three websites, the company logo is
clearly displayed on each page which reminds
the visitor of the website who the organisation
actually is. The corporate communications of
the NRC and BMC college are also excellent

and will definitely contribute to the success of both organisations. The NRC logo contains
navy, white and gold and the colour scheme of the website is related to this. The BMC has a
more sophisticated design of logo and the navy and white coloured website matches this. A
presentation carried out by a representative of the SRC marketing department told that the
logo of SRC was recently changed – probably to keep up to date and compete with the other
two colleges. The branding is definitely more consistent throughout the SRC website which
the colour scheme being dominant on every page. The colouring of the website is an
important feature and it helps SRC become more successful in communicating with its
stakeholders if they get their brand known.
A high number of visitors on each of the three websites will be potential students looking to
see what courses the colleges have to offer and the entry requirements for the particular
courses. On the home page of all three websites there is a “Find course” related tab. This is
evidently a great way to provide potential students with information. It also makes the
website easy to use as common queries are displayed on the home pages of all three
websites.
Similarly, the home page of SRC and BMDC focus on success stories and news surrounding
the colleges. This is important as people like to read about current events and activities that
are taking place within the college so it is an effective way to get information across and an
effective way to communicate news to the target audiences. Contrastingly, the home page
of NRC focuses more on the course and academic side of the college. It seems to display
more about applying, the courses involved and the different levels of education. This
website could be seen to lack variety as the home page doesn’t give enough recent news
and updates about the college – something SRC and BMC colleges both portray.
The SRC and BMC websites both have multimedia playing at all times. There is a constant
slideshow and a fantastic use of images shown throughout. Whereas, the NRC website
remains static, showing less information to the viewer. This lack of information could have a
detrimental effect on the success of NRC as the information is not being communicated as
effectively as it is with the other two colleges.
