Paper 1 –
Natural
Hazards
Revision

,What are natural hazards?

• A natural event that can cause death, injuries or disruption
to humans and can destroy property and possessions.
• Natural disaster: a natural hazard that has happened.
• Extreme events that do not pose any threat to humans are
not considered natural hazards.

,The types of natural hazards

There are 2 types:
- Geological: caused by land and tectonic processes ie:
volcanoes, earthquakes, avalanches.
- Meteorological: caused by weather and climate ie: tropical
storms, extreme weather (heatwaves, cold spells)

, Factors that affects hazard risk
from natural hazards
• Vulnerability: the more number of people in an area, the
greater the chance of being affected.
• Capacity to cope: the better a population can cope, the
lower the risk of damage. For example, HICs can cope
better than LICs.
