,Question 1:
1.1 Three ways in which one can count an object are counting by
ones (unitary), counting by groups of tens and ones (base-ten)
and equivalent (non-standard base-ten). Students can write the
names of the numbers according to their place value but can
also see the number by looking at the objects and then say what
they see.
1.2 Two types of physical models for base-ten concepts are
Groupable Models and Pre Grouped Models. Groupable Models
clearly reflect the relationships of ones, tens and hundreds. Pre
Grouped Models are shown in textbooks and used in
instructional activities. They cannot be taken apart or put back
together. Pre Grouped Models should be used once students
have had adequate experience with Groupable Models.
1.3 The hundred chart can be used to identify place value in two
ways. You can count up or down by tens in each column. You
can establish that in a row, the first number (tens digit) stays the
same and the second number (ones digit) counts up in ones as
you move across.
