Topic 3 - Redox 1
Definition of Oxidation and Reduction (1)
Oxidation - Is loss of electron
Reduction - Is gain of electron
Define Redox Reaction (1)
Redox reaction is when oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously in a
reaction because one species loses electrons which are donated and gained by
the other species.
What does the Oxidation number tell you about an atom?
Oxidation number tells you about the movement of electrons. When atoms
react with or bond to other atoms, they lose or gain electrons. The oxidation
number tells you how many electrons an atom has donated or accepted to form
an ion, or to form part of a compound.
Oxidation number of all uncombined elements?
0 - uncombined elements
Oxidation Number of all elements that are bonded to identical atoms?
0 - identically bonded
