Unwind - Chapter 35 to 45 - Psychologist - Alexandre Gendreau

After having read these chapters, I was perplexed about the Admiral, because he seems to be honest
while he doesn’t say all the truth. Admiral seemed nostalgic when he spoke to Connor at the end of
chapter 34. He thought of his son who was forced to become an Unwind to serve as an example
because if him, because and his influence. At the page 225, we had learned that after he had killed his
son and he had did this horrible act, his wife let him down. He then fell under the hold of alcohol. And
then suddenly, three years after the death of his son, he had the idea to conceive a refuge to save all
the children who have been destined to the same fate of his son.

During chapter 37, we learn the Admiral is not telling all the truth about his intentions and about the
relation which he stills have with his ex-wife. In my opinion, the truth is they are working together to
gather all the organs and pieces of their son to reconstruct him. He is manipulating them all. Connor
is defending a liar and Roland is attacking the Admiral even if he doesn’t know the Admiral’s real
intentions. The Admiral’s motivations are personal. In a way, he seems to be in the service of is ex-
wife to be forgiven for having let their son being unwound, because he seems to do the bulk of the
work to be forgiven to the eyes of his ex-wife, because she was surely in a psychological distress (in
the folklores of the story of Humphrey Dunfee, it was told that his parents were psychologically
annihilated) that he wanted to fill up to get his former life and her former wife back. At the end of
Chapter 37, I learned that the Admiral is redeeming himself and setting things right bit by bit. My
hypothesis about the meaning is that from now, we know that his biggest mistake was to have let his
son to be unwound, so I think he is trying to find the parts of his son. Moreover, at the end of chapter
37, we learned the last name of the Admiral is Dunfee like his son who is in fact Harlan Dunfee or
commonly known under the name of Humphrey Dunfee. After the death of his son, he had felt in my
opinion a deep regret. Before he had quitted, the army, I think that thanks to his rank, he had been
able to identify all the people who had received an organ from his son. In my opinion, this is how he
had proceeded to identify Emby who possessed the lungs of Harlan, because he noticed Emby’s
asthma that is son had to face too.

In conclusion, the main psychological traits of the Admiral are that he is ready to do anything to get
what he wants and to be forgiven even if it is to betray the people who have confidence in him. I think
he is maybe ashamed by what he has done which is a sign of desperation. Then, I think that before
having unwound his son, he had been a good person, but, because of his current situation, he had been
forced to change into a version of himself more selfish.
