Week 5: Data Collection Data collection is at the center of research because the facts gathered will contribute new information as well as answer the research question. For this discussion, please respond to each of the following topics. • Refine your PICOT question. • Explain your specific research approach (qualitative or quantitative) and how it has the potential to answer your research question. • Discuss you data collection method, addressing strengths and identifying one potential weakness. • Identify the actions you are proposing that will help ensure that quality data may be produced by your EBP project. My PICOT question can be refined as follows. • What is the perception of patients who go to free clinics to get access to health care services from Nurse Practitioners? • Participants: Adults and elderly patients without access to health care • Interest: Participants perception of care nurse practitioners care in the free clinics • Context: Patients feelings of getting free health care to maintain health and wellness Explain your specific research approach (qualitative or quantitative) and how it has the potential to answer your research question. My research approach will be qualitative design. This research design will enable me collect my data in the natural environment such as visiting the free clinics and interviewing patients who did not have insurance but are getting treatment from nurse practitioners. We have a free clinic in Toledo that operates every Thursday evening. I can volunteer in that clinic and get the opportunity to interview my clients. Since the qualitative design is mainly to extract peoples feeling towards an issue, my interview will enable me to focus on understanding the experiences lived by these patients, by carefully collecting and analyzing qualitative materials that are narrative and have subjective information (polit & Beck, 2018). Qualitative research will enable me capture the entire aspect of the individual patient experiences, feeling and explanations in a way that is holistic and personal to their entire life. This will help me get the answer to my question in a way that has meaning and quality to my research. Discuss your data collection method, addressing strengths and identifying one potential weakness. My data collection will be through interviews. I will be using the phenomenology method of data collection which will enable me to do comprehensive individual or focus group interviews using a cross sectional collection points. The good thing about using phenomenology for collection of data is that it allows the research participants to freely share their experience and also guide the flow of the discussion (Zubin & Sutton, 2015). Phenomenology method which comprises of face to face interview allows the researcher to understand the personal experience of the research participants (Zubin & Sutton, 2015) One disadvantage of phenomenological method of data collection is the ability of the interviewer to keep up with documentation of all the important information given by the researcher. If the interviewer is taking a note, it will be difficult to write down all the data as stated by the participants in detail (Polit & Beck, 2015) Identify the actions you are proposing that will help ensure that quality data may be produced by your EBP project. The main purpose of qualitative research is to maintain quality data, reduce bias and produce a reliable data. In order to have a quality data collection, the researcher must first recognize their personal feelings or bias towards the research issue and set it aside to be able to document and transcribe the participants experience as truly as possible. Also if a video or audio recording is done for the interview, it should be transcribed accurately as it is to maintain the quality of the interview (Zubin and Sutton, 2015). Another way to ensure quality of data, is for the researcher to ensure that all notes are taken during the time of the interview and a folder should be used to keep all hand written notes related to the interviews in order to prevent loss of any document ( Zubin & Sutton, 2015 References Polit, D. & Beck, C. (2018). Essentials of nursing research: Appraising evidence for nursing practice (9thed.). Philadelphia, PA: Wolters Kluwer. Zubin, A. & Sutton, J (2015). Qualitative Research: Data collection, analysis and management. The Canadian Journal of hospital pharmacy, 68(3), 226-231. Retrieved from Professor’s response Critique one of the quantitative data collection strategies. The purpose of critiquing a research is to identify if the data can be valid and reliable and in a quantitative research, also one can determine if the research can be generalized, tested or applied. According to Polit and Beck, (2018), all decisions made by researchers about data collection can in one way or the other affect the data quality which in turn can affect the study quality. The research I picked is a quantitative research. The purpose of this research is to evaluate health disparities between native Swedes and Immigrants (Ranjbar et al, 2017). The researchers investigated the physical and mental health care disparities of these two populations dividing their research categories into mental wellbeing, common symptoms, self- related health and persistent health issues (Ranjbar et al, 2017). Also researchers wanted to find out if socio economic status played a role in health differences among these two populations (Ranjbar et al, 2017). Method of collection of data was randomized adult samples which they got from Swedes statistics register. They randomly selected 4,023 participants and sent out their questionnaire to these individuals (Ranjbar et al, 2017). The random selection was done to enable them get large sample size (Ranjbar et al, 2017). In this research, in all areas, there were significant differences between immigrant health which was mostly reported as poor health and Swedes native reported good health (Ranjbar et al, 2017). The quality of this data may have been affected in the following ways: Many of the immigrant participants dropped out during the research limiting the immigrant samples to small size, which could lead to underestimation of health disparities that existed between native Swedes and immigrants (Ranjbar et al, 2017). The power among the immigrant strata was weak because of the high drop -out making it difficult to understand the relationship between the variables (Ranjbar et al, 2017). Also the study was not able to explain if differences in immigration status played a role in health disparities which is huge when it comes to determining health care inequality. This critique has made me understand more about data collection. In order to collect a quality data, one has to be specific about the population, find ways to maintain quality of data. If I am sending a questionnaire, I have explain clearly to my participants how the questionnaire will be returned to me, if there is funding, I could pay for the mail so my research participants would not pay to mail my questionnaire back as an encouragement to mail it back to me. In a research, the variables need to be established and made clear to maintain the validity of the information. The researchers in this case also have a previous research done on this issue that they could compare to their own findings. This previous research acted as a good support to them in their research. This critique has made me understand that data collection is very important in any research and must remain clear and consistent for quality purpose. References Polit, D. & Beck, C. (2018).
