P1 -

Introduction – In this task, I am going to describe the type of business,
purpose and ownership of two contrasting businesses. The organisations
that I have chosen to compare are Asda and Islamic Relief.

Chosen business: Asda

Nature and types of businesses –

Asda

Background:

Asda Stores Ltd. is a British supermarket chain which retails food, clothing,
general merchandise, toys and financial services. It also has a mobile
telephone network, (via the Vodafone Network), Asda Mobile. Asda
became a subsidiary of the American retail giant Wal-Mart, the world’s
largest retailer, in 1999, and is the UK's second largest chain by market
share after Tesco. In December 2010, Asda's share of the UK grocery
market stood at 16.5%.

Business activity and scope: Asda sell food, groceries, clothes, toys,
and additional household objects. They also sell a service for mobile
networks. Asda is a British supermarket therefore it operates on a national
scale. It is classified as a national business as Asda is based only in the
UK.

Asda is a large organisation because it has 143,126 employees. Asda has
got more than 500 stores across the UK. Asda current annual sales are
£21bn, they have increased in the last year by 6%.

, Sector of the Business:

Asda operates in the secondary and tertiary sector, for example they
make bread which is in the secondary sector however, Onsite making it’s
also secondary as it is doing some of the manufacturing and it operates in
the tertiary sector as it sells things.

The Purpose: is to provide food, groceries, clothes, toys, and other
household items on a local scale by supplying goods of a satisfaction
quality to customers at a competitive price. This organisation gives
customers better price deals at a cheaper, faster, and quicker way to help
you definitely maximise your savings so they make a better profit. Asda
exists because they want to provide a service and make profit.

Ownership: Asda The ownership of Asda is a PLC (Public Limited Company) this is
because its shares can be brought on the share market making it a PLC. The purpose of
Asda is that they exist to gain profit, the openings of more stores is to gain sales and so
that more customers come into their business etc. Shareholders own the company.
The control of the business depends on who owns the most shares.

Islamic Relief

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international relief and development
organization consisting of a family of 15 aid agencies that aims to
alleviate the suffering of the world’s poorest people. They are inspired by
their Islamic values, and envisage a world where communities are
empowered, social obligations are fulfilled, and people respond as one to
the suffering of others. It is an independent Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984 by Hany El Banna.
