QUESTION 1

1.1 Line in an artwork can be used in many ways. It can be used to suggest shape,
pattern, form, structure, growth, depth, distance, rhythm, movement, and a range of
emotions. We have a psychological response to different types of lines curved line
suggest comfort and ease. Venda tradition attires have colourful horizontal lines
which suggest a feeling of rest or repose because objects parallel to the other are at
rest.

1.2 In the Venda colours, the brown symbolises the Venda soil, while the beauty of
the countryside is reflected by the yellow and blue stands for heaven. The beads
have a deeply religious significance and are passed down from generation to
generation.

In Ndebele colours, there are five main colours represented, red and dark red, yellow
to gold, sky blue, green, and sometimes pink. The colours give intensified symbolic
meaning to the Ndebele. They can mean the status or power of the home’s owners,
offer prayer, announce a marriage in the home, or can represent a current protest.

1.3 The colour theory is the art of combining based on the colour wheel, an
organized illustration of the primary, secondary, and tertiary colours. Accurately
combining colours, using the colour wheel, and understanding how colours relate to
each other are critical skills.

Primary colours include yellow, blue, and red. These are colours that can’t be
created by mixing of other colours. Instead, they combine to create secondary
colour, which in turn combine to create tertiary colours. Secondary colours include
orange, purple, and green, and they are derived from mixing equal amounts of two
primary colours at a time. These colours are available on the Venda attire.

Complementary colours are hues that contrast with each other and are positioned
exactly opposite one another on the colour wheel. The colour wheel is an
arrangement of all colours on the spectrum based on their relationships, and its
useful in creating harmonious colour schemes.

1.4 Contrast in art is the technique of using unlike visual elements in juxtaposition to
create meaning and intensify the characteristics of the work. Artists utilize various
elements at their disposal to create contrast such as shadows, light, colour, size, and

, composition. Contrast is significant because it adds variety to the total design and
creates unity. It draws the viewer’s eye into the painting and helps to guide the
viewer around the art piece. Contrast also adds visual interest.
