Factors that influence surface runoff and groundwater:
Increased runoff Decreased runoff
gradient steep gentle
vegetation sparse dense
rock type impermeable permeable
soil type not porous (clay) porous (loam/sandy)
soil moisture saturated / wet unsaturated / dry
evaporation rate low (overcast) high
amount of rainfall lots litte

Water table:
- Groundwater infiltrates through the soil and percolates (filters) through permeable rock until it
reaches a layer of impermeable rock. The water collects in the pores and cracks of the
permeable rock
- upper level of the zone of saturation
- water table is closer to surface in rainy season
- follows the shape of the land
