1.1 According to the changing roles of teachers learners have to take responsibility of their own learning and be
independent. The teacher has become the mediator of learning.

1.1.1 Appraise the communicative language approach by briefly explaining five of its essential characteristics. (20)

As mediators of learning, the Communicative Approach is considered by many a teacher as one
of the most essential learning techniques to assist learners to communicate and interact effectively
with others. These are five of those approaches that I feel are worth noting:
 Effective communication must be goal orientated
Communication can sometimes be confusing. In order for us to convey ideas and concepts
effectively to one another. As such, one must be cognisant of the main reason why we
communicate in the first place: communication requires two parties to be involved, the
“conveyer” (of the message) and the “receiver” (of the message), with the end-goal usually for
the message to be mutually understood between both parties. A teacher has to have the
necessary know-how and skill to convey a message (idea/concept/learning area) to his/her
audience (class).
 Effective communication usually happens when a language is learnt
Human beings have the unique ability to utilise language as a tool to communicate. The
communication abilities between us include the use of ideas, opinions, emotional expressions
and thoughts, as well as the ability to manipulate a plethora of sounds in a certain context to
bring a message across. Teachers have the opportunity to enhance a learners’ vocabulary
and language skills. By doing so learners expand their knowledge of a language in order to
