Process that Law Firms Engage New Clients
- Chapter 1 of the SRA CoC is all about identifying objectives and the level of
service that clients must receive
- The clients must be given info of:
• Costs:
- Must be done initially then at all stages (breakdown of hourly, etc)
- If done orally then must be confirmed in writing
- Must give the best info about overall possible costs
- Must give basis and terms of charges so they understand the calculation
- Cost-benefit analysis (if there’s another, more efficient manner)
• Responsibility
• Complaints handling procedure
• Confirmation of the lawyer’s status and name of the supervisor
• What the lawyer will be doing for them
• IMP: Scope of the work
- Adequate procedures must also be in place for conflicts of interest
- Checks that the law firm must make:
• Identity and money laundering
• Finance and money on account
• Conflict of interest

- Commercial awareness including market info, competition, history, background,
etc
