More than 700 million people with untreated hypertension › News › item Untreated Hypertension: A Global Health Crisis. Fact Sheet WHO • Hypertension ̶ or elevated blood pressure ̶ is a serious medical condition that significantly increases the risks of heart, brain, kidney and other diseases. • An estimated 1.28 billion adults aged 30-79 years worldwide have hypertension, most (two-thirds) living in low- and middle-income countries • An estimated 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware that they have the condition. • Less than half of adults (42%) with hypertension are diagnosed and treated. • Approximately 1 in 5 adults (21%) with hypertension have it under control. • Hypertension is a major cause of premature death worldwide. • One of the global targets for noncommunicable diseases is to reduce the prevalence of hypertension by 33% between 2010 and 2030. WHO declared that over 700 million people globally have hypertension that are not being treated? It is an hidden crisis that can be prevented if proper guidelines are followed. Some of the cases of Hypertension(HTN) are not diagnosed until complications such as increased risk of heart, brain, and kidney diseases, and is one of the top causes of death throughout the world. The diagnosis of hypertension is very easy and is accessible to most people in the developed countries’ can be checked during office visit, checking with personal apparatus, health fare and clinics. Some of these populations are not taking the advantages of early diagnosis and complication prevention. Unfortunately, hypertension is a silent killer. Symptoms and signs might be absent for long period of time and the affected individuals are naïve and have no clue that they are sick with high blood(Unger et al., 2019). The major complication of HTN is CVA. It is costly to treat, and the recovery process is slow and creates economic burden to the health care industry, also burden to the patient and the family. A stitch in time saves nine. Early diagnosis and eradicating the game of let us wait and see before starting treatment. Proposed Initiatives to early diagnosis and treatment of HTN As nurses, checking of vital signs should not be viewed as just an examination, rather it must be taking serious with education at the point of visit on HTN prevention especially if it runs in the patient’s family. The pharmacy stores should be made mandated to have a functioning blood pressure apparatus that people can walk in to check their B/P during shopping hour. As an APN, the WHO recommendations that covers the level of blood pressure to start medication, what type of medicine or combination of medicines to use, the target blood pressure level, and how often to have follow-up checks on blood pressure guidelines must be followed. Individual B/P apparatus must be provided to patients at risk. The APN must encourage patient to have a log, and the log is reviewed during visit.
