Describe the population the intervention would affect and what the intervention would entail. Explain why the design you chose is the best option for this intervention and include a discussion of the design’s strengths and weaknesses in your response. Support your answer with relevant literature. My (Direct Practice Improvement (DPI) project is evolving as I continue to find the right direction to follow. I am currently contemplating a project in providing educational awareness to a community group about depression. My intervention is to provide individuals with educational resources that will enable participants to recognized depression as an illness and encourage them to seek help. I intend to utilize the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program workshop to educate participants for 2.5 hours weekly for 4-6 weeks. The teaching process makes this program effective. Classes are highly participatory. Mutual support and success build participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives (Self-Management Resource Center, 2020). Most people are afraid of stigma associated with depression preventing them from seeking help. Misunderstanding and lack of knowledge can thus result in public stigma, which in turn affects perceived/self-stigma which affects the ability to seek help. Yokoya et al., (2018) present a study of attitudes and public awareness of depression. According to previously done research, 46% of the participants sought professional help after obtaining education on the same. Therefore, to improve mental health, eliminating misunderstanding and increasing awareness is critical. A descriptive cross-sectional study will probably be the study design for this project. Descriptive epidemiology is used to describe the distribution of disease and other health-related states and events in terms of personal characteristics, geographical distribution, and time (Curley, 2020). This study design is usually less expensive and provide a timely data about the group being study. Since this project will be gear on studying the participants behavior relating to depression and how it affects their view on seeking help, it will determine if educational awareness will change their behavior and view of the disease allow them to seek treatment early. It requires less time and cost effective, but the weakness is that it does not provide us with the true risk of developing a certain disease outcome.
