Unit 3a Proposing a Counseling or Psychotherapy Group Psychotherapy group is effective for children and adolescents. Children and adolescents have a limited understanding of emotions and can be overly sensitive. Guided interactions with peers can increase emotional intelligence and develop social skills that are important developmental goals for children and adolescents (Rushton, 2019). Through psychotherapy group, adolescents can communicate in a way that controls their feelings and experiences. They can learn about themselves, the impact their behavior has on others, and are able to receive feedback from others. According to Henderson and Thompson (2016), “groups function in many ways depending on the goal of the group process. The main goal of group work consists of promoting personal growth and resolving problems and conflicts” (p. 586).
